Employee Retention and Motivation

Employee retention is the resource investment of a company or an employer. A seasoned and experienced employee of a company is the valuable asset of the company and his attrition may cause an irreparable loss to the company, unless and until a suitable replacement takes over the assignment. It may take a number of years of service, training, coaching and mentoring of a new incumbent to reach to the level of efficiency and competence of the relinquished employee. Every employer understands too well the gravity of the loss caused by the migration of an experienced employee, and would never wish lay offs.

When an employee is subjected to prolonged overwork, and not duly compensated, his stress level increases, and he may prefer to quit. Lack of career opportunities in the organisation are a major cause of employee attrition. Quite often, the discord between the boss and the junior may result into later quitting the job. These, and many more, may be the reasons of attrition of employees.

Retention and motivation, though may not form part of the high priority agenda of the company, yet it is significantly important to develop a positive relationship with the employees, so that the employees develop a sense of attachment to the company. Employees act charged and motivated when they are adequately compensated and nourished in terms of wage, perks, honour and security. In the present day global era, when the job market has wide opened, the employees expectations too have caught up with the global trend. The employees demand trendy wages, a meaningful job, career opportunities, training and coaching, and the core benefits like medical care etc.

How to foster employee motivation :

Employee motivation describes an employee’s intrinsic enthusiasm and drive to accomplish work. Incentives and rewartds : Incentives and rewards act as fuel to keep the flame ignited and enthusiasm built up. Special awards and incentives to outstanding performers should be instituted.
